The castle was built on the Vistula embankment in Sandomierz by King Casimir the Great. Originally, as a wooden structure it was a fortified seat. It was surrounded by a wood and earth embankment, a moat and a ground floor. In the fourteenth century, from the foundation of the king, the wooden stronghold was transformed into a brick Gothic building built on an octagonal plan. It had a fortified tower and castle wall. As one of 32 others, the Sandomierz Castle was issued on the orders of Casimir the Great as part of an action to strengthen the defense of the country and individual cities. He was also elected as the seat of royal starostes. In the 16th century, King Sigismund I the Old rebuilt the Gothic castle into a Renaissance residence. The existing building was transformed into the southern wing, an additional eastern wing was erected and the construction of the western wing was begun, which was completed during the reign of the next king Sigismund II Augustus. During the Swedish invasion, the castle was destroyed by blowing up. Only the west wing remained in good condition. On the recommendation of Jan III Sobieski, it was rebuilt into a detached palace building, which has survived to this day. He held clerical, judicial and prison functions. In the years 1965-1986, thorough renovation and conservation works were carried out at the castle, which were intended to be used as the seat of the District Museum in Sandomierz.
