The building was built at the turn of the 13th and 14th centuries. It probably already existed in 1306, because at that time Władysław Łokietek gave it to the bishop of Kraków, Jan Muskata. The castle played an important role, often the king was here and knights' conventions were held in the years 1310, 1318, 1331, 1333. In 1318 the treasury of the Gniezno archdiocese was deposited in fear of the Teutonic Knights. During the reign of Casimir the Great, the castle became the seat of castle starostes and the residence of royal families. He turned the castle into a royal fortress that had not been captured for over 250 years, significantly expanding it. In 1607, during Rokosz Zebrzydowski, the buildings were burned and the fortifications were destroyed. In the years 1655–1657 it was completely destroyed by the Swedes and the assault of Rakoczy's units. The stronghold was abandoned in 1707 after its next devastation by the Swedes.
