The facility was founded in 1979 as the Toy Museum. It has a huge collection of both historical and modern toys. It is one of the few and the largest institution of this type in Poland. In 2004, Mayor of Kielce Wojciech Lubawski donated the historic nineteenth-century building of the former market halls at Plac Wolności to the museum headquarters. A general renovation of the building was completed in November 2005. On March 9, 2006, by resolution of the City Council, the Toy Museum, it changed its name to the Museum of Toys and Play, and the new headquarters was put into use on June 1, 2006. On this day, on the clock tower of the museum, Baba Jaga appeared on the broomstick. Historic toys constitute the most valuable collection.
